Ignis and Stellenbosch University (SU): Advancing fire safety through research and partnership

PIONEERING FIRE SAFETY WITH ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

At Ignis, we are committed to advancing fire safety standards through rigorous research and testing. Our partnership with Stellenbosch University (SU), particularly with the Fire Engineering Research Group in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, underscores our dedication to academic excellence and innovative solutions in the field of fire safety.

FIRE ENGINEERING RESEARCH GROUP AT SU

Research and Development at Ignis

Ignis serves as a critical research hub for students pursuing advanced degrees in fire safety and engineering. Our state-of-the-art facilities have hosted numerous thesis projects, contributing significantly to the academic and practical understanding of fire dynamics, materials’ behaviour under fire conditions, and fire safety engineering. Furthermore, owner Dirk Streicher serves as an extraordinary faculty member of Stellenbosch University (SU). This contribution to fire engineering research and development comes at a time when few tertiary institutions offer training in this field that is so crucial to public safety.

Below is a list of students who have done their research in collaboration with Ignis.

PhD Students:

  • Jaleel Claasen - Thesis
  • Marika du Plessis - Thesis
  • Anene Oguaka – Thesis to be online soon
  • Fourie Wiid – Ongoing
  • Yohannes Shewalul - Ongoing
  • Darren Sulon – Ongoing
  • Courtney Devine - Ongoing

In addition to these listed students, many others have conducted parts of their research with the involvement of Ignis, significantly extending our academic contributions.

Scholarly contributions

Our collaboration with Stellenbosch University (SU)  has also resulted in significant academic publications where Ignis has co-authored. These papers highlight our role in advancing fire safety research and our commitment to sharing knowledge with the broader scientific community.

Innovative Research Facilities

Our facilities at Ignis are equipped to support a wide range of experimental research. Notable projects include:

  • CFD Modelling of Ignis Furnaces by Morne van Biljoen, which provides impressive visualisations and detailed analysis of fire dynamics.
  • Large Scale Testing in Specialized Furnaces by Jaleel Claasen, demonstrating our capability to conduct extensive and complex fire tests.

These projects not only contribute to academic knowledge but also provide valuable insights and practical solutions for enhancing fire safety in various materials and structures.
